Tracker Data Explanation
Now that the tracker data is appearing on our tracker page I’ll try and explain the information displayed. As the trimarans have retired there are now four IRC classes still racing and each class has been given a name associated with a famous OSTAR yacht from previous races. The classes are:-
IRC 1 PENDUICK
IRC 2 GYPSY MOTH
IRC 3 JESTER
IRC 4 EIRA
To see which yachts are in each class go to where it says list under the Google Map click on the classes displayed and the yachts in that class will be listed with their current position data. The box next to List and headed “latest Report” contains a history of all the reports in time order.
Now I’ll move to the list of data provided; but list them down the page so that I can provide an explanation for each one starting from the left.
LINE This is their order in the whole fleet based on distance to go (DTG)
CLASS This is their position in Class based on DTG.
CORR Stands for Corrected position in Class based on their IRC handicap.
NAME Name of Yacht
SKIPPER Name of Skipper
CLASS An initial to identify which class the yacht is in e.g PD = Penduick
ID This letter is coloured according to class and the letter identifies the yacht
on the Google map A B C etc
POSN Yachts position at the stated time Latitude & Longitude.
TIME Indicates the time last position was received from yachts tracker.
SPEED Indicates the speed of the yacht at the time the tracker reported.
COURSE Indicates the course the yacht at the time of the tracker report
DTG Distance to go to a Waypoint just off the Finish Line in Newport
Explanation of who the winners are:-
Traditionally the OSTAR was split into classes based on waterline length and the winners in class were the yachts which arrived first in each class. In 2005 when we reverted to running the OSTAR in its current format we decided to split the classes on the basis of IRC handicap and the class names are as listed above.
So for OSTAR 2009 the Winner of the race will be the first yacht to finish in Newport but all other prizes will be based on corrected time in each class. There will also be a prize for the Overall IRC winner on corrected time.
PS Ocean Race Track have informed me that they have manually inserted Oscar Mead’s (King of Shaves) position on to their tracker chart at 0600 today. His tracker is not reporting at present.
